چکیده

Causal diagrams have a long history of informal use and, more recently, have undergone formal development for applications in expert systems and robotics. We provide an introduction to these developments and their use in epidemiologic research. Causal diagrams can provide a starting point for identifying variables that must be measured and controlled to obtain unconfounded effect estimates. They also provide a method for critical evaluation of traditional epidemiologic criteria for confounding. In particular, they reveal certain heretofore unnoticed shortcomings of those criteria when used in considering multiple potential confounders. We show how to modify the traditional criteria to correct those shortcomings.

Using Causal Diagrams to Understand Common Problems in Social Epidemiology

Epidemiologists typically seek to answer causal questions using statistical data: we observe a statistical association between poverty and early mortality and seek to determine whether poverty causes early death. An essential component of epidemiologic training is therefore learning what statistical relations imply, or do not imply, about causal relations. This is why the cliché “correlation do...

Trends in the investigation of social determinants of health: selected themes and methods.

We analyze bibliometric trends of topics relevant to the epidemiologic research of social determinants of health. A search of the PubMed database, covering the period 1985-2007, was performed for the topics: socioeconomic factors, sex, race/ethnicity, discrimination/prejudice, social capital/support, lifecourse, income inequality, stress, behavioral research, contextual effects, residential seg...

Stock Flow Diagram Making with Incomplete Information about Time Properties of Variables

Models for numerical simulations should be described in a coherent style. They are expected to have consistencies at the causal dependency level. However, System Dynamics causal loop diagrams can have inconsistencies. This diagram style’s arrows, concerning flow and stock relationships, can have the opposite direction of stock flow diagrams which can numerically simulate models. These inconsist...

Model Averaging for Improving Inference from Causal Diagrams.

Model selection is an integral, yet contentious, component of epidemiologic research. Unfortunately, there remains no consensus on how to identify a single, best model among multiple candidate models. Researchers may be prone to selecting the model that best supports their a priori, preferred result; a phenomenon referred to as "wish bias". Directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), based on background ca...

Effects of causal loop diagrams on escalating commitment

Previous research suggests that decision makers have the tendency to keep on investing in losing courses of action. The present study focuses on de-escalation and proposes causal loop diagrams as a technique to decrease escalating commitment in a failing action. The effectiveness of causal loop diagrams is also contrasted with the effect of receiving a list of important factors. Causal loop dia...
